Once upon a time, in an age when women were just coming into their own, a private club was built near the University of California at Berkeley. It continues today as a public hotel.

The Club Is Built

In the 1920’s, the role of women was changing rapidly. More women were continuing their education, more were choosing careers, and more were becoming involved in their communities. A pioneering group of women in Berkeley desired to have a place where they could gather for sports, meetings, and company. There was a need for lodging for single working women or those on their own.

Thus, a forward thinking group founded the Berkeley Women’s City Club with the intention of providing services and a residence for women. They raised the funds and engaged the architect, Julia Morgan, to design and build their Club. At the time the membership of the Club was about 4,000. Miss Morgan took on the project and the facility was built in about eleven months.
